One year with Newcastle’s light rail

On Monday 18 February 2019, Newcastle Transport carried the first customers on our new light rail service, creating a truly multi modal network for Newcastle. It is now a year later and Newcastle Transport wants to celebrate the first anniversary of light rail services.

Newcastle Transport will hold an event at the Newcastle Interchange on Tuesday 18 February 2020, between 7:30am and 10am to mark the occasion. Celebrations will take place complete with live music, refreshments, a photobooth and cupcakes! Our team will also be on hand to discuss all things light rail and answer any Newcastle Transport questions you may have.

Newcastle has fallen in love with light rail with over 1.2 million passenger trips recorded in the first 365 days of operation. The light rail has made Newcastle Transport a truly integrated network, with almost half of passenger trips using the light rail to connect with bus, ferry or train services.

There were over 78,500 trips scheduled in the first 365 days of operation, totalling in over 212,000 kilometres worth of trips. To put that in perspective, our light rail vehicles have travelled the earth’s circumference almost five and a half times!
