Newcastle Transport are looking back at public transport across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. Over the last century, there has been a variety of ways to move people around the city and suburbs from rowboat, steam and electric tram, double decker buses and more recently on demand public transport, light rail and Zero Emission Buses.

In anticipation of the upcoming Open Day at Hamilton Depot later in May, the Newcastle Transport team are looking for people to share their photos, memories or recollections, whether they be past employees, neighbours or former customers with fond memories.

Keolis Downer Hunter General Manager, Emmanuel Genlot, said the Hamilton Depot Open Day would allow the community to come behind the scenes of Newcastle Transport.

“There will be the opportunity to have a tour of the depot and maintenance workshop, meet some of our drivers, check out both new and old buses, try out the driver’s seat of the latest Zero Emission Bus, enjoy a coffee and there will be facepainting for the kids,” Mr Genlot said.

The Newcastle Transport team has been working with University of Newcastle’s Living Histories to share a regular Throwback Thursday post on social media to look back at local public transport nostalgia.

“We know Novocastrians are proud of the rich history our city has and the evolution of public transport has been a key part of everyone’s life at some point, whether travelling to school, the shops, social events or work,” said Mr Genlot.

“These Throwback Thursday posts have quite a popular following with some great engagement and commentary around these posts.”

“We are hoping to take this a step further and ask past employees and customers about their memories to share with the community.”

“Whether it is a recent memory, or something way, way back, we are interested to hear all types of stories about your recollections of getting around Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.” “I also encourage you to pop the Hamilton Depot Open Day in your calendar.”
