Potential roles

Bus operator

Being a bus driver involves a lot more than driving. It’s work that’s rewarding, varied and enjoyable, focused on providing key services to connect Newcastle and Lake Macquarie communities to where they work, live and play.

You are in charge of:

  • Getting passengers to their destination safely and on time
  • Providing great customer service
  • Interacting with the public in a number of ways, including updating passengers during disruptions.

Our service relies on a work roster with shifts across early mornings, days, nights and weekends, public holidays and special events.

Light rail operator

Our light rail drivers have an important job in ensuring Newcastle Light Rail operates safely and efficiently.

You will:

  • Have strong skills in psycho-motor, multitasking, reaction and problem-solving and leadership
  • Move customers around Newcastle’s CBD, safely and on time
  • Provide great customer service.

Ferry crew member

With one of the best offices in Newcastle, our ferry masters and crew play a key role in Newcastle’s integrated transport network for connecting customers from the north of the harbour.

You are in charge of:

  • Getting passengers to their destination safely and on time, while navigating a working harbour and monitoring changing weather conditions
  • Providing great customer service
  • Interacting with the public in a number of ways, including updating passengers during disruptions.

Operations controller

Based in our multimodal control centre in Wickham, controllers are the eyes and ears of the Newcastle Transport network to make sure services operate safely and reliably for customers.

You will:

  • Communicate with bus and light rail operators to provide on the road support
  • Monitor bus, ferry and light rail services to make sure services are on time
  • Manage unplanned disruptions across the network.

Maintenance and assets

Our maintenance team looks after two ferries, six trams and over 180 buses across our operation to make sure our assets are safe and reliable.

You will have:

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge gained in a fast-paced repair, service or maintenance environment
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Trade qualifications, or experience in trades work within rail, buses or ferries.

Frequently asked questions

Can you help me get my bus driving licence?

Yes, our trainers are qualified to provide training to receive your bus driving licence.

If you are interested in becoming a bus operator we encourage you to apply even if you have just a car licence.

How much does a bus operator earn?

The average bus operator earnings per annum is $85,000.

Base rates:

Trainee Bus Operator – $28.29 per hour

Bus Operator Level 1 – $32.05 per hour

Where are the roles based?

We have two bus depots at Hamilton and Belmont. Appointments are made in accordance with operational requirements. However, you will be asked for your preferred locations during the application process and this will be taken into consideration where possible.

Our light rail team and operational controllers are based at the Wickham light rail depot.

The ferry team is based at Queens Wharf.

Most administration roles are based at our Hamilton depot with flexible options available.
