Marg drives the Christmas Bus one last time
The iconic Newcastle Christmas Bus is back!
The Christmas Bus has been spreading holiday cheer for 27 years and is the brainchild of Newcastle Transport Bus Operator Trainer, Margaret Pannell.
This is an extra special year for the Christmas Bus, as Marg plans to retire in the new year, leaving behind an incredible legacy.
The Christmas Bus was born from Marg’s heartfelt desire to bring joy and comfort to lonely travellers during the festive season.
“Back in 1997, it was just a small way to bring some joy to people who might not have much else to look forward to during the holidays,” Margaret recalls. “It’s amazing to see how it’s grown into something so loved by the whole community,” she said.
The bus started with a humble setup: tinsel and a tape player blasting Christmas carols. Over the years, her vision grew into a spectacular display of lights, baubles, and elaborate decorations.
Marg is again behind this year’s Christmas Bus with the help of her colleagues; to conclude her career and reflect on the memories she’s created with the whole community.
Keeping the Christmas spirit alive has always been a team effort, with drivers, maintenance crews, and operations staff coming together to make the magic happen for the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie community.
Christmas Bus Schedule 2024
The Christmas Bus will run from Sunday, December 1, through Christmas Day.
This year, the bus will have surprise guest appearances throughout the month! Holiday characters, including the Grinch, an Elf, Mrs. Claus, and even Santa, will join some of your favourite drivers to spread cheer.
Margaret herself will be behind the wheel on December 1 and December 15, continuing her legacy for another year – she might even pop up on a couple of other surprise spots across the month.
